Often, our job is not to teach a young athlete something new, but draw their attention to the familiar.

In a recent workshop I ran with footballers, a young lad asked me how he could stay motivated.

I had him close his eyes and clearly recall a motivating experience.

Then I got him to describe it:

How motivated we are towards the challenge in front of us, and whether or not we persist through the certain difficulties that come with it, comes down to one thing.

Control.

Intuitively, every young athlete know this.

They might just need a little reminding.
